Nick was sitting on the deck, shaking his head: “Un-fucking-believable.”

Billy looked scared. “What’s going to happen?” he asked, his voice spiking.

I told him they would send out a boat to tow us in.

“But how will they know where we are?” he said. “All you can see is water.”

“Here, put this on,” I said, handing him a blaze-orange life vest. I gave one to Nick and Erin too. From the cabin I retrieved the inflatable life raft and the EPIRB. I showed Billy the red beacon and explained that when you throw the switch, a signal bounces off a satellite and tells the Coast Guard exactly where you are. “But we won’t have to use it. Trust me.”

The radio squawked. I smiled at Billy and said, “See?”

The operator told me he had given our position to Sea Tow. A boat was on the way. He also said he would check back with us on channel 12 every fifteen minutes. Nick was sitting in the stern, working the bulb, and couldn’t hear what was said, so I relayed the info.

“What are we looking at for an arrival time?”

“About an hour,” I said. “Their boats have twin engines, deep V hulls. Really fast.”

Billy asked, “Will we get back in time for the Spurs game?”
